As the birthplace of public education in this nation, the Boston Public Schools (BPS) is committed to transforming the lives of all children through exemplary teaching in a world-class system of innovative, welcoming schools. The Boston Public Schools is committed to eliminating access and opportunity gaps so that all children are performing at high levels and achieving proficiency.
What is it like to teach at Boston Public Schools?
Our mission is to ensure that principals, teachers, paraprofessionals, and school support staff have the knowledge, skills and resources they need to provide a high-quality early education experience for all students.
What kind of support does Boston Public Schools offer new teachers?
New Teacher Developers (NTDs) are a cadre of skilled, exemplary, and experienced teachers who engage in individual or small group mentoring with beginning teachers. NTDs work with teachers on classroom management, lesson and curricular planning, and instructional strategies. They conference, model, co-teach, observe, and provide support in all of the areas that are challenging for beginning teachers during their first year of teaching. They support school-level induction activities for new teachers including classroom-based coaching and demonstration lessons, and help to coordinate new teacher orientations. Their work is guided by the district’s professional teaching standards, the Dimensions of Effective Training, and intensive professional development provided by the University of California, Santa Cruz New Teacher Center.
How does Boston Public Schools demonstrate that it is commited to teacher diversity?
Recruitment, Cultivation & Diversity Programs (RCD) resides in the Office of Human Capital, led by Chief Francesse Canty, Esq. This is a division of the Office of the Superintendent to ensure that the district places the elimination of disparities, particularly racial disparities, at the center of all of our instructional and operational work.
Recruitment, Cultivation & Diversity Programs (RCD) combines cultivation, pipeline development, and diversity programs to better support candidates and employees throughout their careers. RCD is committed to developing, preparing and retaining a racially, ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse group of highly effective and culturally proficient teachers and staff members every year. We
continue to focus our efforts on three key “levers” for our work:
1) Recruit and Develop employees
2) Cultivation
3) and Retain employees.
These levers remain at the center of our strategy for mitigating teacher attrition and sustaining the retention of our teachers of color.
RCD has significantly scaled up and augmented its existing programming to meet high demand and to recruit and develop aspiring and current educators of color. It will also work in collaboration with the Division of Equity, Strategy & Opportunity Gaps to ensure Systemic Racism is disrupted by providing
Strategic Systemic Support, by ensuring Transparent Accountability and Removing Barriers to Increase the diversity of our school-based and central office staff and leaders.
